The scope of the research is developed directly by the interns under the guidance of the Impilo Phambili program director. The research, exposure, and learning experience culminates into workshops and projects developed and conducted predominantly by the interns for community members and to train/educate NGO staff, health care workers, entrepreneurs, and students. This experience is specifically for the enhancement of the participants. The interns are the focus and are given much attention for the development and enhancement of their academic and professional skills. We work very closely with each participant and semi-customise the experience to best meet the objectives and desires of each intern, predominantly in the fields of public health/medicine/nutrition, psychology/mental health/counselling, business/leadership/development, social work/justice. We work with underserved South Africans and other vulnerable populations, including women, children, victims, and refugees.

Four to ten Residential Counselors are assigned to each house or residence hall, and provide supervision of participants for all program activities and residential experiences. Residential Counselors also act as teaching assistants for an assigned course, providing instructional support in the academic portion of the program.
The main instructional role for Residential Counselors takes place during a three-hour period in the early afternoon. During this time, Residential Counselors work closely with participants on their coursework, either in one-on-one sessions or in small groups. During the late afternoon and evening, Residential Counselors in cooperation with Activities Coordinators lead recreational and social activities such as sports and games, arts and crafts, campus and local excursions, etc. Weekends include field trips and other organized activities, supervised by the Residential Counselors. This is a full-time residential position.
Responsibilities of the Residential Counselors position include:
-Tutoring participants in the course subject areas and providing support to instructional staff
-Leading afternoon, evening, and weekend recreational and social activities
-Building strong and healthy residential learning communities that enhance participant academic progress and success

Position Summary
As a member of the Great Oaks Tutor Corps, you will mentor and tutor middle or high school students at a Great Oaks Charter School for the duration of one school year (August-June). This is a service role through AmeriCorps with regular full-time hours Monday-Friday and some Saturdays.
In exchange for your year of service you will receive a living stipend, free furnished housing with utilities included, health insurance and on-going professional development throughout the year. You will also be eligible for a Segal Education Award through AmeriCorps after the completion of your AmeriCorps term of service. Responsibilities
As a Great Oaks Tutor Corps member you will invest your time and energy in the success of a small group of middle or high school students to help pave the way to their college success. The majority of students enter Great Oaks several years below grade level, so this role requires hard work, creativity and a dedication to helping students beat the odds. Most of your day will be spent tutoring students one-on-one or in small groups. You will also take part in secondary projects that directly impact the academic achievements of students. These projects may include providing in-class or curriculum support, organizing or leading after school clubs or working with our culture team.
Specific responsibilities include:
Bolstering student achievement:
Provide daily tutoring to several small groups of Great Oaks students
Work closely with teachers to develop individualized tutorial content
Assess student progress on a regular basis
Bridge a connection between classroom teachers and the content they deliver in their classrooms with the content you are delivering during tutorial sessions
Lead after-school student clubs
Support Saturday Academy over the course of the school year when necessary (dependent on school community placement)
Work with students to set individualized student driven goals on a frequent basis
Actively participate in meetings pertaining to your role as a tutor and the success of the students you are working with
Building relationships with families:
Develop authentic relationships with families through phone calls and other communications to share progress on student tutorial performance

Be present during transitions and escorting students when necessary

Qualifications and Competencies

General Information
This AmeriCorps service role will start in early August of 2017 and run through June of 2018.
